From classic Big Five game drives and immersive bush walks to night safaris, conservation experiences and cultural excursions, guests can explore the region from a variety of perspectives, both within the reserve and beyond.

• Game Drives: Explore the Big Five territory of the Madikwe Game Reserve in open Land Cruisers accompanied by qualified rangers. Morning and afternoon drives depart according to the season and weather conditions, offering opportunities to experience the reserve during its most active periods. Rhulani aims to accommodate families and groups together while ensuring generous space and unobstructed views for guests.
• Night Drives: Venture into the bush after dinner for an approximately two-hour private night safari. With the darkness revealing a different side of Madikwe, guests may encounter nocturnal species such as scrub hares, chameleons, eagle owls, genets, wildcats and potentially leopard. The experience also includes a quiet opportunity to switch off the vehicle and lights, listen to the sounds of the bush and admire the star-filled sky.
• Bush Walks: Experience Madikwe on foot with an experienced walking safari guide and discover the smaller details of the reserve. Guests can learn about local fauna and flora, explore animal tracks, observe smaller wildlife, discover wild herbs and their traditional uses, and uncover fascinating details ranging from spider webs to dung beetles.
• Rhino Conservation: Take part in a private conservation experience that offers insight into the protection of Madikwe’s rhino population. Guests meet the conservation team, veterinarian and helicopter pilot before witnessing the search for a rhino and the notching process. Depending on the circumstances, guests may participate in taking samples, implanting a microchip and assisting with the rhino’s return to the wild.
• Eastern Madikwe & Anti-Poaching Operations Centre Visit: Travel across the reserve to its eastern reaches, experiencing changing landscapes and wildlife along the way. The excursion includes refreshments and a packed lunch, as well as a visit to the Anti-Poaching Operations Centre, where guests can learn about the technology, strategies and ongoing efforts used to protect the reserve and combat rhino poaching.
• Tshembo Hide: Descend through a quiet tunnel into the Tshembo Hide, an underground lounge beside a watering hole. Floor-level windows provide an intimate perspective of animals and birds gathering to drink, creating distinctive photographic opportunities. The hide is also open at night, when guests may have the chance to see nocturnal wildlife such as spotted hyenas or leopard.
• Local Village Tour: Discover local Tswana culture and community life with a visit to Supingstad or Lekgophung. Guests can meet a village elder, learn about community history and the traditional kgotla, and visit local schools, a health clinic and community projects or small enterprises. The experience is designed around respectful and authentic cultural interaction that benefits the local community.
• Gaborone City Tour: Cross into Botswana and discover the capital city of Gaborone, located less than 40km from Rhulani Safari Lodge. Guests can choose between a Traditional City Tour or The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Tour, returning to the lodge in time for high tea and the afternoon safari.

Conservation Activities

Climate change is an urgent issue and hits close to the heart at Rhulani. As such, guests are encouraged to lower their carbon footprint by planting trees during their stay. The Lodge proudly holds a membership to Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) – the national greening, food gardening, and climate change action enterprise that contributes to disadvantaged communities.
